what is a
blueprint?
The purpose of a blueprint is to articulate:
-
Current State – where are you now? While the exact metrics and descriptors will be unique to each client, this will typically include research into, and understanding of; organisational structure, attendance metrics, staff sentiment, team co-dependencies and the alignment between individual and organisational goals.
-
Future State – where do you want to be? The project may involve property decisions around scale and location. However, this is not always the case, and the project may be a change in work practices. For example; RTO strategy, re-purposing of existing workspace, coaxing teams out of offices or the introduction of new work settings or technology.
While the nature of each project is different, the value of an evidence-based approach following a current state | future state model is universal. A deep understanding of the current state + clear articulation of the desired future state are critical to project success.
Puzzle’s cross-functional team are expert at helping you ask the right questions, run research to fill in any blanks and then analyse and distil the findings into actionable insights.
Often, we integrate into a project team with specialised expertise such as designers, technology consultants, leasing agents, builders, project managers and more. Puzzle add value to the conversation by applying a people-focused lens throughout the process.
where + when do puzzle fit in the
project team?
It is widely recognised that there are 3 pillars to support a successful workplace project... Place, Technology and People.
Place is all about getting the physical environment right.
Technology is about ensuring a seamless and enabling user experience from a technology perspective.
People is about instilling new behaviours, building engagement, fostering positivity and ensuring that teams are enthusiastic and educated around how to work in the new environment.
None of these pillars should be viewed in isolation, especially in the early scoping and defining stages of a project or workplace transformation.
We believe there are significant benefits realised by engaging a cross-functional team early, that collectively can best inform a detailed and evidence based functional brief. Applying a people-focussed lens at this stage to provide a foundational understanding ensures that the project will deliver the desired outcomes and allocate resources and budget to achieve maximum value and return on investment.

right fitting real estate
Size isn’t everything...it’s what you do with the space. A deep understanding of your people will inform how and where you should provision that space to maximise benefits to the organisation.
It is vital to understand how much space your organisation needs to thrive. This cannot be done without a deep understanding of when and more importantly, why, your people come to the office. By reducing uncertainty, accurate modelling will provide clarity around space requirements, ensuring efficient spend on real estate.
We understand the imperative for return on investment, and strongly believe that a deep understanding at the scoping stage will reduce inefficient and ineffective spend as well as reducing risk during the project.
The ways Puzzle can assist might include:
-
Understanding and changing cultural and behavioural levers that could have an effect on the physical space required, eg, attendance patterns.
-
A thorough understanding of what is important to staff (recognising this will vary across the organisation) to inform key drivers for the project.
-
Unpack the data lake specific to the organisation. Our analysts will extract insights from the available data pool, and we can support research to fill in any data gaps.
-
Build an understanding of the attractors and detractors for coming into the office, and which are most important.
-
Resilience and resistance to change can be assessed and managed early, with project risk mitigated.
-
Learn from our experience with other organisations to think outside the box and explore potential opportunities.
how to build a strong
foundation
To generate a clear understanding of the current state requires the amalgamation of a range of data points overlaid with the expertise to interpret + convert these findings into actionable insights. A complete picture can only be derived from a combination of Quantitative, Qualitative and Benchmarking inputs.
Quantitative
Data driven insights into the hard metrics driving the project and the space required
-
Access card data
-
Occupancy tracking data
-
Room booking information
-
Floorplan metrics
-
Observation studies
-
Storage audits
-
Printing logs
Qualitative
Understand how space is used, corporate culture + readiness for change
-
Leader interviews
-
Staff surveys
-
Focus groups
-
Workshops
-
Observation studies
Benchmarking
Compare findings with industry data to provide context and evaluate comparative performance
-
Benchmarking data
-
Case study analysis
-

adding
puzzle power
When engaged early as part of the project team, Puzzle brings a breadth of experience + perspective to the project that leads to better project outcomes.
de-risk
A strong evidence-based project foundation builds alignment across stakeholders + reduces the risk of time + budget blowouts through repeated design iterations.
scalability
Drawing from a large team, Puzzle can resource the project to ensure outcomes are consistently delivered on time to a high quality standard.
integrated people thinking
Puzzle understand people! By integrating thinking around change management in the early stages of the project we can bring ideas + perspective to the table around the people “pillar” of the project.
data nerds
Our analysts are expert at distilling + drawing actionable insights from a data ocean.
reduce “noise”
With a stronger evidence baseline, anecdotal opinion is supplanted by objective truth, enabling clear, accurate + fast decision making.
gap fillers
Where there are gaps in the existing data pool, we help to fill them in. Whether this is qualitative, quantitative or benchmarking data, Puzzle can deploy proven methodologies quickly.
